How SimpliVity OmniCube Goes Beyond Hyper-Convergence

As the IT infrastructure becomes increasingly complex, organizations are looking to simplify the data center stack to reduce costs and management pains. This has driven demand for converged and hyper-converged infrastructure platforms that integrate compute, storage and networking resources into one solution supported by a single vendor.

However, there are two fundamental problems with many converged infrastructure solutions. Some provide gains in terms of time-to-deployment and ease-of-management. Because they limit resource pooling to the server layer, they don’t do enough to reduce complexity or total cost of ownership (TCO). Others provide a single, localized resource pool for enhanced utilization and a simplified stack, but they do not provide all of the functionality needed in today’s virtualized data center, such as de-duplication, WAN optimization or data protection.

SimpliVity’s OmniCube solution addresses these gaps by collapsing all IT infrastructure and services below the hypervisor into one software-defined platform. Designed and optimized for the virtualized data center, OmniCube is a high-performance, simple-to-manage, rack-mounted appliance that converges eight to 12 core data center functions into 2U building blocks running on enterprise-class servers.

In addition to server, storage and network functionality, OmniCube provides a wide range of advanced features normally found in disparate appliances and software packages:

  • Native VM-level backup
  • Real-time, inline global de-duplication and compression
  • Bandwidth-efficient replication for DR
  • Cache-accelerated performance
  • WAN optimization
  • Cloud integration

OmniStack is the core technology that powers OmniCube and enables the delivery of this broad scope of functionality — all at a fraction of the acquisition and operating costs of the traditional infrastructure stack. More than a hyper-converged infrastructure solution, OmniStack is a data virtualization platform that features a globally aware file system and object store with built-in data protection and optimization and policy-based VM-centric management.

Two or more OmniCube systems can be deployed together to form an OmniCube Global Federation, a massively scalable pool of shared resources that enables efficient data movement and enterprise-class system availability across multiple sites. Replication can occur between any two data centers within a Federation as well as to the cloud for simple but powerful disaster recovery. All OmniCube systems in the Federation can be managed globally from a single pane of glass. Because all data is de-duplicated and compressed, the data transfer is extremely efficient for substantial bandwidth savings.

OmniCube is fully compatible with VMware vSphere and works seamlessly within the VMware environment. In addition, SimpliVity recently announced OmniStack for Hyper-V, with availability aligned to the planned release of Microsoft Windows Server 2016.

The new OmniStack 3.5 offers greater intelligence and automation capabilities for large enterprise deployments. SimpliVity’s new web-based dashboard, OmniView, provides predictive analytics and trend analysis, delivering actionable intelligence for optimizing performance and resource utilization and effectively managing growth.
